◈바울이 하지 않은 설교            행18:1~18            15.08.30. 출처보기

                   

*미국 뉴올리언스 신학교 교수님 설교인 것 같으나, 이름은 찾지 못했습니다.

 

오늘 이렇게 여러분을 뵙게 된 것이 제게는 큰 영광이며 특권입니다.

아주 특별한 영광인 것은 뉴올리언스 신학교의 졸업생 피영민 목사님이 담임하시는 교회이기 때문입니다.

오늘은 사도 바울의 인생 중 대단히 중요했던 한 순간에 대해서 살펴보며 은혜를 나누고자합니다.

 

 

◑본문 설명

 

사도행전을 보면 ‘교회 설립자’인 사도 바울이 여러 지역에 교회를 세운 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

그는 1차 선교여행을 통해서 오늘 날 터키지역에 많은 교회를 세웠습니다.

복음을 전하고 교회를 세우는 바울은 어느 도시를 가도 같은 일을 했습니다.

 

먼저 유대교 회당에 들어가서 복음을 증거하면,

복음을 반대하는 유대인들이 바울을 쫓아냈고,

그래서 이방인들을 찾아가 복음을 전하면, 얼마 지나지 않아 폭동이 일어났던 것입니다.

 

사도행전 17장에서 사도 바울은 아덴으로 가서 복음을 전하였지만

이렇다 할 선교의 큰 열매를 얻지 못했습니다.

그리고 이후 하나님께서는 바울에게 고린도로 가라는 명령을 내리셨습니다.

 

고린도는 큰 도시였지만 아주 사악하고, 엄청나게 타락한 도시였습니다.

그러나 예수 그리스도를 모르는 자들에게 가는 것을 좋아했기 때문에

바울은 아덴에서 짐을 싸서 고린도로 향하게 되었습니다.

 

바울이 아덴을 떠나 고린도에 당도하여 보게 된 ‘고린도 항구’는

그 당시 고대세계에서 가장 유명했던 곳 중 하나였습니다.

고린도 항은 항구에 정박한 배를 육지로 끌어올려, 반대편 바다를 항해할 수 있도록

육로로 배를 이동시킬 수 있는 시설이 갖추어져 있었습니다.

 

바로 이런 기술력 때문에 고린도는 고대세계에서 아주 유명한 도시가 되었고,

대단히 부유한 도시가 되었습니다.

 

또한 바울은 고린도의 유명한 경기장도 볼 수 있었습니다.

전 세계에서 수많은 운동선수들이 이곳으로 몰려와서

오늘날의 올림픽과 같은 경기를 치를 수 있었습니다.

 

이렇게 고린도의 경기장에서 각종 운동경기가 열리는 날이면

사람들은 이것을 기화로 많은 도박을 행했습니다.

 

그리고 고린도의 한복판에 이르게 되었습니다.

도시의 중앙에는 상인들이 자리를 잡고 물건을 사고팔고 있었고,

로마의 총독이 백성들을 재판하는 자리가 있었습니다.

 

그리고 고린도 언덕에는 ‘미의 여신’이라고 불리는 비너스 상이 있었습니다.

고린도의 종교는 바로 비너스 여신을 숭배하는 것이었습니다.

그러다 보니 고린도는 다른 어떤 도시들보다도 도덕적, 성적으로 타락하고 부패한 도시가 되었습니다.

 

▲사도 바울은 이처럼 크고, 이방 종교가 성행하며 부패한 도시는, 처음 와보는 것이었습니다.

그러나 바울은 다른 도시에서 했던 것과 똑같이 행동하였습니다.

 

그는 먼저 유대인의 회당을 찾아가 “예수는 그리스도이며 하나님의 약속하신 메시아다!”라고 증거하였습니다.

어떤 사람들은 바울의 말을 듣고 예수를 믿었지만, 대부분의 사람들은 믿지 않았습니다.

 

회당의 지도자들은 화가 나서 바울을 회당에서 쫓아냈습니다.

바울은 유대인들이 복음을 거절하니까, 이제 이방인들을 향하여 복음을 증거하기 시작했습니다.

 

그 결과 많은 이방인들이 예수님을 믿고 그리스도인이 되었습니다.

그래서 고린도에 교회가 설립된 것입니다.

 

▲그런데 바로 그 때 믿기 어려운 한 사건이 일어나게 됩니다.

유대인의 회당장이었던 사람(그리스보)이 개종하여 예수님을 구주로 믿게 된 것이었습니다.

 

행18:8 또 회당장 그리스보가 온 집으로 더불어 주를 믿으며

수다한 고린도 사람도 듣고 믿어 세례를 받더라.

 

이 날은 고린도 교회의 가장 행복한 날임과 동시에

사도 바울에게는 매우 두려운 날이기도 하였습니다.

 

그 날 밤, 사도 바울은 두려운 마음을 가지고 잠자리에 들게 되었습니다.

위대한 사도 바울도 잠자리에 들 때, 두려운 마음을 가지고 있었습니다.

 

만일 고린도같이 악하고 거대한 도시에서 폭동이 일어나면

자기 생명을 잃을 수도 있다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었기 때문이었습니다.

 

:9 밤에 주께서 환상 가운데 바울에게 말씀하시되, 두려워하지 말며 잠잠하지 말고 말하라

 

여러분, 바울과 같이 위대한 사람도 마음속에 두려운 마음이 있었다는 사실이 놀랍지 않습니까?

 

위 9절에, 하나님이 두려워 말라고 하신 것은,

바울이 두려워하고 있었다는 증거입니다.

 

우리도 사람들에게 복음을 증거할 때, 때로는 두려움이 엄습하고 겁이 나기도 합니다.

그러나 염려하지 마시기 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 우리에게는 좋은 친구가 함께 계시기 때문입니다.

 

이제 바울에게 어떤 일이 일어났는지 보겠습니다.

바울이 두려운 마음으로 잠자리에 들었을 때,

예수님께서 한 밤 중에 환상으로 찾아오신 것입니다.

 

예수님이 바울에게 말씀하시기를

“더 이상 두려워하지 마라. 내가 너와 함께 있지 않느냐?

아무도 너를 공격하여 해할 수 없다. 계속 설교하고 잠잠하지 말라!”고 하셨습니다.

 

:9 밤에 주께서 환상 가운데 바울에게 말씀하시되 두려워하지 말며 잠잠하지 말고 말하라

:10 내가 너와 함께 있으매 아무 사람도 너를 대적하여 해롭게 할 자가 없을 것이니

     이는 이 성중에 내 백성이 많음이라 하시더라.

 

저는 예수님께서 두려움에 떨고 있는 바울을 찾아와 위로하셨다는 사실을, 너무나 좋아합니다.

예수님은 두려움에 사로잡혀 있는 바울을 혼란스럽게 하시지 않으시고 격려하셨습니다.

 

▲그래서 바울은 다음 날 아침에 일찍 일어나서 설교하고 복음을 증거하였습니다.

그리고 1년 6개월을 무사히 보냈습니다.

 

:11 일년 육개월을 유하며 그들 가운데서 하나님의 말씀을 가르치니라

 

 

그러나 그 직후 드디어 문제가 생겼습니다.

어느 날 잠을 자고 일어나보니 군중들이 자기 집으로 몰려오는 것이었습니다.

 

:12 갈리오가 아가야 총독 되었을 때에 유대인들이 일제히 일어나 바울을 대적하여 재판 자리로 데리고 와서

 

바울은 폭동이 일어났다는 사실을 직감하게 되었습니다.

폭도들은 바울을 집에서 끌어 내어 고린도 한복판으로 끌고 왔습니다.

 

그리고 로마 총독의 재판정 앞에 세웠습니다.

유대인들이 그를 둘러싸고 로마법 앞에 바울을 송사하고 정죄하였습니다.

 

:13 말하되 이 사람이 율법(로마법을 뜻함)을 어기어 하나님을 공경하라고 사람들을 권한다 하거늘

   *원문은 노모스, 이 말은 율법, 로마법 둘 다 쓰이나 문맥상으로 여기서는 로마법을 뜻함

 

당시 로마법에 의하면 송사사건이 있을 때,

송사하는 사람이 먼저 말을 하게 되어있습니다.

그래서 그들은 바울을 죄수로 만들기 위해 온갖 거짓말을 하고 정죄하였습니다.

 

그리고 그들의 송사가 끝났습니다. 로마법에 의하면 송사하는 사람이 말을 마쳤을 때,

피고도 변론할 수 있는 기회를 갖도록 되어 있었습니다.

 

:14 바울이 입을 열고자 할 때에 갈리오가 유대인들에게 이르되

     너희 유대인들아 만일 무슨 부정한 일이나 괴악한 행동이었으면 내가 너희 말을 들어주는 것이 가하거니와

 

사도 바울은 자신을 옹호하는데 관심이 없었고

그들이 자기를 때리기 전 마지막으로 다시 한 번 복음을 증거하려고 하였습니다.

 

그래서 성경에 이렇게 기록되었습니다. “바울이 입을 열고자 할 때에 ↑”

바울은 입을 열어 무엇인가를 말하려고 하였지만

바로 그 때 예수 그리스도께서 이 사건에 개입하셨습니다.

 

그리고 모든 사람이 놀라도록 로마 총독이 갑자기 말했습니다.

‘갈리오가 유대인들에게 이르되’ :14

 

“이 사건은 종결되었다. 나는 이 사건에 상관하지 않겠다!”

 

:15 만일 문제가 언어와 명칭과 너희 법에 관한 것이면 너희가 스스로 처리하라

      나는 이러한 일에 재판장 되기를 원치 아니하노라 하고

:16 저희를 재판 자리에서 쫓아내니

 

그러자 구경하던 군중들이 화가 났습니다.

그래서 바울을 때리려다가, 바꾸어 바울의 소송에 앞장섰던 유대 지도자(소스데네)를 잡아 공격했습니다.

 

:17 모든 사람이 회당장 소스데네를 잡아 재판 자리 앞에서 때리되

     갈리오가 이 일을 상관치 아니하니라.

 

바울을 때리는 대신에, 송사했던 자들을 혼내고 있었던 것입니다.

예수 그리스도는 전혀 불가능해 보이는 상황 속에서도

바울을 보호하시겠다는 약속(:10)을 지켜주셨습니다.

 

 

◑이 본문 속에서 혹시라도 바울이 저지를 수 있었던 세 가지 실수를 발견할 수 있습니다.

 

▲1. 첫 번째는 폭동이 일어나기 전에 고린도를 떠나는 것입니다.

바울도 폭동이 일어난다는 소문을 들어서 미리 알고 있었을 것입니다.

그러나 바울은 그곳에 머물러 있었습니다.

 

그가 고린도를 떠나지 않았기 때문에, 피하지 않았기에,

예수 그리스도께서 자신의 약속↓을 지켜주신 것을 경험하게 되었습니다.

 

:9 밤에 주께서 환상 가운데 바울에게 말씀하시되 두려워하지 말며 잠잠하지 말고 말하라

:10 내가 너와 함께 있으매 아무 사람도 너를 대적하여 해롭게 할 자가 없을 것이니

     이는 이 성중에 내 백성이 많음이라 하시더라.

 

▲2. 두 번째, 송사하는 사람들이 말하고 있을 때

바울이 중간에 끼어들 수도 있었습니다.

 

때로 하나님은 원수들로 하여금 우리를 공격하고,

우리를 거스려 말을 하도록 허용하실 때가 있습니다.

 

그런데 만약 바울이 송사를 당할 때 중간에 끼어들어서 자기 자신을 변호했다면

이 사건은, 예수 그리스도가 행하실 일을 빼앗는 경우가 되었을 것입니다.

 

이것은 매우 어리석은 생각입니다.

이렇게 거짓된 송사가 진행될 때 바울이 아무런 말도 하지 않고 잠잠했기 때문에

예수 그리스도가 이 사건을 직접 담당하실 수 있었습니다.

 

▲3. 세 번째는 고린도에 오랫동안 머무르는 것이었습니다.

바울은 고린도에서 안전했습니다.

 

그러나 하나님은 우리가 안락한 자리에만 있기를 원치 않으십니다.

하나님은 바울에게 다른 곳으로 가서, 또 다른 할 일이 있다고 말씀하십니다.

 

때로는 우리도 하나님의 목적을 이루기 위해, 위험한 상황에 처할 수도 있습니다.

얼마 후에 하나님이 다시 바울을 찾아오셔서,

고린도를 떠날 때가 되었다고 말씀하셨을 때, 그는 떠났습니다.

 

:18 바울은 더 여러 날 유하다가 형제들을 작별하고 배 타고 수리아로 떠나갈쌔

 

바울이 고린도를 떠날 때 무슨 생각을 했겠습니까?

그는 고린도의 한복판을 지나가게 되었을 것입니다.

 

그 아폴로 신전 옆에는 배를 타러 가는 도로가 있었습니다.

그리고 바울은, 아폴로 신전 바로 옆에 있는 로마 총독의 재판 자리에 잠깐 머물러서

하나님이 내게 해 주신 일이 무엇이었었는지를, 생각을 해 보았을 것입니다.

 

그것은 바로 예수 그리스도가 자신에게 하신 약속을 끝까지 지켜주셨다는 것이었습니다.

바울은 그의 생애가 끝날 때까지, 예수 그리스도는 약속을 지키시는 분이시라는 교훈을

결코 잊지 못했을 것입니다.

 

▲저도 여러 해 전에 고린도에 갔던 적이 있습니다.

아폴로 신전이 지금도 여전히 폐허가 된 상태로 있습니다.

그리고 그 광장에 있는 가게들도 폐허로 남아 있습니다.

 

로마 총독의 재판정 자리가 여전히 거기에 폐허로 남아 있었습니다.

저는 사도 바울이 재판 받았던 그 자리에 서서 사도행전 18장을 다시 읽고

“예수 그리스도는 당신이 행한 약속을 반드시 지키시는 분이시다”라는 생각을

다시 해 보게 되었습니다.

 

그리고 바울이 짐을 꾸리고 배를 타러 도로를 내려가면서

이 옛날 찬송을 부르는 모습을 상상했습니다.

 

♫주의 약속하신 말씀 위에서, 세상 염려 내게 엄습할 때에

말씀으로 힘써 싸워 이기며 약속 믿고 굳게 서리라!♪ (통합399장 2절)

 

바울이 만약 이 자리에 서서 설교를 했다면, 바울은 이 설교를 했을 것입니다.

여러분이 가지고 있는 하나님의 말씀을 매일 읽으시고 공부하시기 바랍니다.

하나님으로 하여금 여러분에게 약속을 주시도록 기도하시기 바랍니다.

그리고 하나님의 약속을 읽을 때, 예수 그리스도는

언제나 그의 약속을 지켜주신다는 사실을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

Thank you very much! It is a great honor and a privilege for me to be here with you today. A very special honor because your pastor Dr. Pee is the greatest Korean graduate we have ever had from our seminary. Today, we want to look at a very important moment in the life of Paul, the apostle.

 

Already in the book of Acts, we have watched Paul, the church planter, at work. He has worked his way across the land we now call 'Turkey', starting churches and lifting up Christ. In every city, he does the same thing. He starts with the Jewish synagogue. They get mad and he goes to the gentiles, and there is a riot, and they beat him up and run him out of the town.

 

And now he finds himself in Athens, realizing God wants him to go to Corinth. The city of Corinth was big. It was bad and it was corrupt. But Paul liked going where people did not know Jesus, so he packed his suitcase and began walking from Athens to Corinth. As he approached Corinth, he first came to their famous port, one of the most famous sites in the all the ancient world.

 

At the port of Corinth, they would literally lift ships up out of the sea, put them on rollers and drag them to the other side of the piece of land and launch them into the sea on the other side. The ability to do that made the Corinth very famous and very wealthy.

 

As he moved closer into the heart of Corinth, he saw the great Corinthian stadium. There world famous athletes would come to compete in games, very similar to the Olympics. Those games were the source of much gambling in the city of Corinth. Finally, he arrived in the town center of Corinth. All around the square were the booths and businesses of merchants buying and selling. In the center of the square was the bema of the judgment seat where the Roman rulers would make his decrees. and towering over it all was a mountain on top of which was the temple of Venus, goddess of love. The worship of Venus, the goddess of love, was the most popular thing in Corinth. Famous for immorality in the city that was known all over the world.

 

Paul had never been in a city this big, this pagan and this tough. But he did what he always did. He stated at the synagogue telling them that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah promised of God. Some of them believed, but most of them did not. Soon the leaders of the synagogue were angry and drove Paul away. So he began telling the gentiles in the city, that Christ was the savior of the world. And many began turning to Christ, becoming Christians.

 

A church was started and then the incredible happened. The leader of the Jewish synagogue himself gave his life to Christ and became a Christian. It was such a happy day of the church at Corinth but it was a frightening day for Paul the apostle. That night, Paul went to bed very afraid. That's right. Paul the great apostle, went to bed afraid. He was afraid because he knew that conversion of the synagogue leader would start the riot. And he knew if the riot started in a place like Corinth, he would probably not survive. So he went to bed afraid.

 

Does it surprise you to know that Paul the great apostle was ever afraid? It should not because when you tell people about Jesus, sometimes it is frightening and scary. If you ever become afraid, you are in good accompany.

 

But guess what happened next. When paul went to bed afraid, Jesus came for a visit. He came to Paul in a vision in the night. He said to Paul, "Do not be afraid any longer. For I am with you. No one will attack you to harm you. Go on preaching, and do not be silent." I love the fact that Jesus came when Paul was afraid. And he did not fuss at him. He encouraged him.

 

So Paul got up the next morning, and he began again to teach and preach Jesus. A year and a half went by and then it happened. He woke up in the morning, looked out the window, and saw a mob coming down the street straight to his house. And he knew the riot had finally happened. They took him out of his house and they took him to town center, to the judgment seat for the Roman leader. With a crowd all around they began to attack Paul before the Roman law. By Roman law, the prosecutor always spoke first, so they attacked him. They told lies and untrue thing trying to condemn him before the Roman law. Finally, they finished their accusation. By Roman law, the one attacked always had the right to speak.

 

Paul was not interested in defending himself. He wanted to preach one last sermon before they beat him up. So the Bible tells us, 'Paul opened his mouth to speak.' And what did he say? Before a word left his mouth, Jesus interrupted. To the shock of everyone, the Roman ruler suddenly said "Case dismissed. I care nothing for this." The crowd became angry, and they began to attack the Jewish leaders. Instead of beating up Paul, they beat up his accusers. Jesus kept his promise. Even when it seemed impossible, Jesus kept his promise.

 

Now there were three mistakes that Paul could have made. one. He could have left before the riot began. He must have heard rumors, but he stayed anyway. Because he stayed, he got to see Jesus keep his promise.

 

The second mistake he could have made, would have been interrupting his enemies. This is a hard lesson. Sometimes, God will allow our enemies to speak against us and attack us. But if Paul would have interrupted his enemies, he would have taken his case himself and taken it out of the hands of Jesus. It is always a bad idea to take anything out of the hands of Jesus. Because Paul was silent, while the false accusations were made, Jesus kept his promise.

 

The third mistake he could have made would been staying in Corinth too long. It was now obvious he was safe in Corinth. But God does not always want us to be safe. There were other places God wanted him to go and other things that God wanted him to do. Sometimes, to accomplish the purposes of God, we must put ourselves at risk. And so when God came to Paul a few weeks later and said it's time to leave Corinth, Paul left.

 

I want you to imagine what it was like for Paul when he left. Can you see him packing his suitcase after that amazing stay in Corinth? Can you see him carrying his suitcase down to the town square again one more time? Right next to the temple of Apollo, the road to the sea began. Can you see Paul stopping right there in front of the judgement seat, next to the temple of Apollo, to remember what God had done? Jesus made a promise to Paul and Jesus kept it. For the rest of his life, Paul never forgot Jesus keeps his promise.

 

So a few years ago, I was there. I was at the ancient Corinth. The temple of Apollo is still there in ruins. All the shops and businesses around the square still there in ruins. The judgment seat of the Roman ruler still there in ruins. and I stood there where Paul stood, and I read the story again. And I remembered. Jesus keeps his promises. And as I imagined Paul picking up his suitcase and starting down the road to the sea, I could almost hear him singing that old hymn.

 

'Standing on the promises of God I cannot fail. When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, by the living word of God, I shall prevail, standing on the promises of God.' So if Paul were standing here today, this is what he would say to you. Read and study your Bible everyday. Give God a chance to make a promise to you. And when you read the promises of God, know Jesus will always keep his promises.
