The Difference between a Congregation and the House of God

In Haggai 1:7, 8, Haggai urges the people to complete the building.

학개서 1:7~8절에서, 학개는 귀환한 백성들에게, 성전 짓는 일을 완성하라고

촉구합니다.

 

The foundation had been laid many years earlier. But they stopped there.

기초는 수년 전에 이미 놓여졌으나, 그때 공사가 중단되었습니다.

 

Jesus spoke a parable about a man who laid only a foundation and then did not complete the building (Lk.14:28-30).

예수님은 '건물의 기초만 놓고 중단한 사람의 비유'를 말씀하셨습니다. 눅14:28~30

 

That parable comes right in the middle of a section on being His disciple.

그 비유는, 제자가 되라는 가르침의 중간에 하신 말씀입니다.

 

What Jesus was implying was that evangelism without disciple-making was like laying a foundation and not completing the building.

그 비유에서 예수님이 말씀하신 의미는

전도를 했어도 제자로 만들지 못한다면

그건 건물을 짓다가 기초만 놓고 중단한 것과 같다는 것입니다.

 

Is a foundation necessary? Yes, absolutely essential.

건물에 기초가 꼭 필요합니까? 예 꼭 필요하죠.

 

That is the first work to be done when building a house.

기초는 집을 지을 때 가장 먼저 하는 작업입니다.

 

Is evangelism necessary? Certainly.

전도도 필요한가요? 물론이죠.

 

That too is the first work to be done.

전도 역시 제일 처음 행해지는 일입니다.

 

But if you only evangelize and don’t make disciples, that is wasted effort – as useless as a foundation without a building.

그러나 당신이 전도만 하고

제자를 만들지 않는다면 그건 헛수고이죠.

기초만 공사하고 건물을 세우지 않는 것처럼 쓸모가 없는 일입니다.

 

Hebrews 6:1-3 warns us of such foolishness: “Let us not lay again the foundation of repentance, faith, water-baptism, baptism in the Holy Spirit, and teaching about resurrection and the final judgment.”

히6:1~3절은 그 어리석음을 경고합니다.

“우리가 그리스도 도의 초보를 버리고

죽은 행실을 회개함과, 하나님께 대한 신앙과

세례들과, 안수와 죽은 자의 부활과, 영원한

심판에 관한 교훈의 터를 다시 닦지 말고... (완전한 데 나아갈지라)”

 

All of that is just the foundation.

위의 모든 것은 기초라는 것입니다.

 

The writer says that we must then press on to perfection – that is building the house.
히브리서 기자는 말씀하기를

"우리가 완전한데 나아갈지라" 히6:2

이것은 (기초위에) 집을 올리는 것이죠.

 

After we have converted people to Christ through evangelism, we must make those converts, disciples of Jesus who follow Him and press on to perfection.

우리가 전도를 통해 사람들을 믿게 한 다음에는, 그들을 예수님의 제자로 만들어

그들이 완전한데 나아가도록 해야 합니다.

 

So Haggai’s message is not about laying the foundation.

그래서 학개의 메시지는 기초를 놓으라는 뜻이 아니죠.

 

It is about perfection – completing the building, the Body of Christ.

그것은 완전함에 관한 것입니다.

건축을 마치라는 것인데요, '그리스도의 몸'의 건축을 뜻합니다.

 

▶What is the difference between a congregation and the house of God?

회중과 하나님의 집과의 차이가 무엇입니까?

 

If you cut out 50,000 stones from a quarry and bring them to the building site, that is evangelism.

만약 당신이 채석장에서 돌 5만개를 잘라서 그걸 집짓는 터에 운반해 올 때

그것은 전도에 비유됩니다.

 

These stones symbolize people who are born again.

그 5만개의 돌들은 거듭난 사람들을 상징합니다.

 

But they are not a building as yet.

그러나 그 돌들은 아직 건물이 아닙니다.

 

They are just a pile of stones.

아직 그저 돌무더기인 거죠.

 

That is what most evangelical congregations today are.

이것은 오늘날의 대부분 복음주의적 교회의 회중의 상태입니다.

 

These stones must now be built up, being placed next to each other, if they are to be an ｅxpression of Christ’s Body.

이 돌들은 이제 건축되어져야 하고

서로서로 연결되어 지어져야 하고

그래서 그리스도의 몸이 만들어져야하죠.

 

That is the difficult part – to build them together into the house of God.

그런데 이 부분이 어렵습니다. (데려다놓기는 어쩌면 쉬우나)

그들을 함께 하나님의 집으로 세우는 일 말입니다.

 

Many churches today are mere congregations, where one man (the pastor), like a watchman, has to ensure that no-one steals his “stones”.

오늘날 많은 교회들은 그저 회중에 불과

합니다. 거기에 경비원/목회자가 있죠.

목회자는 혹시 자기 돌들을 누가 훔쳐갈까 봐 지키고만 있습니다.

 

When one of his “stones” decides one day to join another church where he can receive more spiritual help, the watchman will complain that others are stealing “his stones”!

어느 날 자기의 돌들 중 하나가 다른 교회

에 가서 영적인 도움을 받으려 하면 경비원은 불평합니다.

다른 이들이 자기 돌들을 훔쳐간다고요!

 

But if he had built that stone into a building,

it would have been impossible for anyone to steal it.

그러나 만약 그가 그 돌로 건물을 세웠다면

아무도 그 돌을 빼내가지 못했을 겁니다.

 

If you build the Body of Christ, you won’t have to worry about others stealing your members.

만약 당신이 그리스도의 몸을 건축하면

당신은 다른 사람이 당신의 교인을 훔쳐갈 것을 걱정 안 할 것입니다.

 

When stones are built together and cemented, with stones on top of them, under them, and to their left and right, who can steal them?

왜냐면 돌들이 함께 지어지고 세멘트가

발라지면 그 돌 위에도 돌이 얹히고

그 아래에도 돌이 놓이고, 좌우에도 돌이 놓이는데

어떻게 그걸 빼 갈 수 있겠습니까?

 

I have led a church in Bangalore since 1975; but I have never complained that anyone stole anyone from our church.

저는 1975년부터 인도 벵갈로에서 교회를 목회해 왔습니다.

그때부터 지금까지 저는 한 번도 누가 우리 교인을 빼간다고 불평한 적이

없습니다.

 

Those who are being built together as a body in our midst cannot be stolen.

우리 가운데 그리스도의 몸에 함께 지어진 사람들은

절대 빼내 갈 수 없습니다.

 

So let us build God’s house and not just lay a foundation and accumulate stones.

그러므로 하나님의 집을 건축합시다.

그저 기초만 놓고 손 놓거나

돌들을 모으는 데만 만족하지 말고요

 

Notice the strong rebuke the Lord gives in 1:9-11.

학개서 1:9~11절에서

주님이 강하게 꾸짖으신 것을 주목하세요.

 

There is a great need in our churches for preachers who know how to speak a word of rebuke in love.

오늘날 교회에 사랑으로 꾸짖을 줄 아는 설교자들이 많이 필요합니다.

 

There is plenty of preaching nowadays, but very little rebuke and correction.

오늘날 설교는 많이 되어지지만, 꾸짖거나 교정하는 설교는 거의 없어요

 

When God allows defeat or constant failure in your life, you need to stop and listen to what He is trying to tell you.

하나님이 당신의 삶에 패배를 허락하거나

당신에게 실패가 계속된다면

당신은 잠시 멈춰서

하나님이 당신에게 말씀하시는 바를 들어보시기 바랍니다.

 

Ask yourself, “Why is the fruit of the Spirit missing in my life? Why is my family-life in a mess?

스스로 질문해 보세요.

"왜 내게는 성령의 열매가 없지?

왜 우리 가정생활은 엉망이지?"

 

Why is there no rain from heaven? Why is there a dryness in my life?” (학1:9-11).

"왜 하늘에서 비가 안 내리지?

왜 내 삶이 메마르지?“

 

It may be because you are more concerned about earthly matters and your bank account than about your walk with the Lord!

이 이유는 당신이 이 세상 일에 더 관심을 쓰기 때문일 수 있습니다.

당신의 은행잔고를 당신이 주님과 동행하는 일보다 더 관심을 쏟을 때요!

 

When Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest heard this prophecy, they responded to Haggai’s message immediately and said,

스룹바벨과 대제사장 여호수아가

이 학개의 예언을 들었을 때

그들은 학개의 메시지에 즉시 반응하며 이렇게 말했습니다.

 

“We will start building God’s house straightaway.”

우리는 지금 즉시 하나님의 집을 짓기 시작하겠습니다.

 

or symbolically, “We will not engage in mere evangelism henceforth.

이 말은 상징적으로는

우리는 그저 전도만 하지 않겠습니다.

 

We will make disciples as well. We will build Christ’s Body and not a one-man church.”

앞으로는 제자양육도 하겠습니다.

우리는 그리스도의 몸을 건축하겠으며

'한 사람(목회자)의 교회'는 만들지 않겠습니다.

 

The church is to be like a functioning body - and not a pile of body parts, as found in anatomy laboratories -

교회는 건강한 몸과 같습니다.

몸의 각 기관이 그저 흩어져 모여있는 게 아니에요.

그건 해부학 실습실이죠.

 

where they have many hands, legs, eyes and ears lying around, but none of them connected with each other by life.

거기 가 보면 손도, 다리도, 눈도, 귀도 많이 여기 저기 놓여있죠.

그러나 아무 것도 살아서 서로 연결되어 있지 않죠.

 

And so they cannot function together.

그래서 그 기관들은 함께 기능을 하지 못합니다.

 

Many churches today are exactly like that.

오늘날 많은 교회들이 정확하게 이와 같아요
