It was a city in Greece, even though it was Roman

basically it was in Greece, it was in Greece and very much

influenced by Greek language, Greek thinking,

and Greek philosopher as we all are.

 

고린도교회는 그리스 지역입니다

당시는 로마시대였지만 바탕은 그리스였어요

그리스 지역이었고 그래서 그리스 언어, 그리스 사고에 많은 영향을 받았지요

그리고 우리 모두와 마찬가지로 그리스 철학자들의 영향을 받았어요

 

In Western civilization our basic thinking is Greek.

Democracy is a Greek word. There is on democracy in the

Bible or whatever but we all love democracy. It is Greek.

 

서구 문명인 우리들의 기본적 사고는 헬라(=그리스)적입니다

민주주의는 헬라어죠

성경에는 민주주의나 그 비슷한 것이 안 나옵니다

그러나 우리 모두는 민주주의를 사랑합니다 그건 헬라적이지요

 

And sport came from Greece. There is nothing about sport

in the Bible except for one or two illustrations in Paul.

There is nothing telling about sport yet sport is the

religion of the men of this country and it came from

Greece from Olympia or the Peloponnese. And so many

things come to us from Greek.

 

그리고 스포츠가 그리스에서 유래했어요

성경에는 스포츠가 안 나오고

바울이 스포츠에 대한 한 두 번 예를 든 것 뿐이죠

성경에는 스포츠를 말하지 않지만

그럼에도 스포츠는 이 나라 남자들의 종교가 되었습니다

그건 그리스의 올림피아, 펠로폰네소스 지역에서 유래한 것입니다

그래서 오늘날 우리들의 많은 것들이 그리스에서 유래했어요

 

And the worst thing about the Greek thinking was that they

always separated the physical and the spiritual. They could

never get those two things together. And therefore

they had no real place for the body.

 

헬라적 사고 중에 가장 안 좋은 것은

그들은 언제나 육체와 영혼을 분리합니다

그들은 결코 육체와 영혼을 합치지 않습니다

그래서 그들은 육체에 대해 합당한 위치를 부여하지 않습니다

 

Body and soul were two separate things and I’m afraid

Christian thinking has picked up that Greek idea that our

job is saving soul. Well the Hebrew never thought like that.

‘영혼만 구원’하려 하는데요

그렇지만 히브리적 사고는 결코 그렇게 생각하지 않습니다

 

The Hebrew thought of a person as a whole person body

and soul together, one thing.

To them a soul was a breathing body which is the origin of SOS save our souls meaning save our bodies.

 

사람에 대한 히브리적 사고는

육체와 영혼이 합쳐진 전체 사람으로 봅니다 하나로 봅니다

히브리적 사고로 혼soul은, 숨쉬는 육체를 포함합니다

 

이것은 SOS의 기원인데

그건 Save Our Souls를 의미하죠

그 의미는 (영혼을 구해달라가 아니라) 육체를 구해달라입니다

(둘을 하나로 보는) 히브리적 사고이죠

 

So the real problem behind a lot of these problems at

Corinth was that they are thinking that the body is

somehow not connected with the soul.

 

그래서 고린도에서 드러난 많은 문제들 뒤에는

그들의 사고구조가 있는데

즉 육체는 영혼과 연결되어 있지 않다는 사고입니다

 

And getting into kind of super spirituality that only thinks of the soul and what happens inwardly

whereas the body is a as much part of me as my spirit.

God created both

 

그래서 초영성주의으로 빠져서

그건 오직 “영혼과 내면세계”만 집중하는데

그렇지만 “육체”도 영혼처럼 나의 일부라는 것입니다

하나님은 둘 다 창조하셨습니다

 

and that is why the Greeks believe

that a death, your body disintegrated and your soul was

free. And they talked about an immortal soul in a

mortal body, whereas Hebrew thinking is exactly the opposite that

we have a mortal soul and need an immortal body.

 

그래서 헬라인들은 죽음을, 육체가 분리되어

영혼이 자유로워지는 것으로 믿습니다

그래서 그들은 불멸의 영혼이 죽을 육체속에 있다고 말하죠

 

반면에 히브리 사고는 정반대인데

죽을 영혼은 불멸의 육체가 필요함을 믿습니다

 

So when this mortal puts on immortality then death is

swallowed up in victory. The body is very important.

The Christians doesn’t believe in the immortality of

the soul. That is Greek.

 

그래서 이 죽을 것(육체)이 죽지 않을 것(부활체)을 입을 때

죽음은 삼켜지고 승리하게 되죠

육체는 대단히 중요합니다

크리스천은 영혼불멸성을 믿지 않습니다 그건 헬라적 사고죠

 

We believe in the resurrection

of the body, that is Hebrew. And it is their attitude to

the body that they couldn’t get

right behind a lot of these questions.

 

우리는 육체의 부활을 믿습니다 이것이 히브리적입니다

그런데 육체에 대한 고린도인의 태도는 올바르지 못했습니다

그래서 많은 문제를 일으키는 삶을 살았습니다

 

And the body and the soul were kept separated.

So the Greeks did one of three things with their bodies.

They are indulge them and said no matter what you

do with your body it doesn’t affect your soul or they

ignore them and try to live a life free from physical

desires, a kind of asceticism.

 

▲이렇게 육체와 영혼이 분리되면

그래서 헬라인들은 “육체”에 대해 3가지 중 하나의 태도를 가집니다

1. 그들은 육체에 흠뻑 빠져 살면서도

자기 육체로 어떤 일을 행해도 그건 영혼에 아무 영향이 없다고 믿습니다

 

2. 혹은 그들은 육체를 무시해서 육체적 소원과는 자유롭게 살아갑니다

심미주의적 삶이죠

 

Or they idolize their body and made statues of the

perfect body. That has gotten into our western culture.

 

3. 혹은 그들은 육체를 우상화해서

완전한 육체의 동상을 만들었습니다

이 사고가 우리 서구문화에 내려왔습니다

 

If you’ve seen the Greek statues, their sports

were in the nude because they idolized the body.

 

만약 여러분이 그리스 동상들, 스포츠 그림을 보셨다면

누드로 되어있는데 왜냐면 육체를 우상화해서 그렇습니다

 

And all these are wrong attitudes to the body and

Paul has to say to the Corinthians, “Don’t you know

that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit“ and

what you do with body will affect your soul.

 

이 모든 것은 육체에 대한 잘못된 자세들입니다

그래서 바울은 고린도교인들에게 말해야 했습니다

“너희 육체는 성령의 성전인줄 알지 못하느냐?”

너희 육체로 행하는 일은 영혼에 영향을 미친다!

 

And getting drunk in the Lord’s Table is affecting

your spiritual life. And visiting prostitutes are

affecting you. You are actually joining Christ to that

prostitute because your body is part of Christ now.

 

‘성찬에서 술 취하는 것은 너희 영적 생활에 영향을 미친다

창기에게 가는 것도 너희에게 영향을 미친다

너희들은 실제로 그리스도를 그 창기와 합하는 것이다

왜냐면 너희 육체는 지금 그리스도의 지체이기 때문이다’

 

See it is their attitude to the body that they haven’t

got right and that is why they has such problems

believing in the resurrection because that is of the

body.

 

보십시오 이것이 그들의 육체에 대한 자세였고

그건 틀린 개념이었고

그래서 그들은 부활을 믿는데 많은 문제들이 있었고

왜냐면 육체의 부활이었기 때문입니다

 

And still today people have problems with

things of the body when our bodies are part of

what God made us to be.

 

▲오늘날 여전히 사람들은 육체적인 것에 문제가 있습니다

In the Jewish book of prayer, there is a lovely

prayer to use when you go to the toilet.

 

유대인 기도책에는

화장실에 갈 때 드리는 기도가 들어있어요

 

It is just praises that your body is working prperly and

thank God for the relief that's brought. I feel much

better hallelujah.

 

자기 육체가 잘 활동하고 있음을 찬양하고

잘 배변되는 것을 감사하는 기도입니다

그럼 기분이 좋아지죠 할렐루야

(육체적인 것을 무시하지 않습니다)

 

To us that's very unspiritual and I go into some

Christian loos that really are plastered with

devotional texts and have a part of devotional

books by the seat, everything to take my mind off

of what I’m doing and on to spiritual things.

 

용변이 우리들에게는 영적이지 못한 것으로 여깁니다

그래서 제가 크리스천 집의 화장실에 가 보면

벽에 성구로 도배를 해 놓았고

옆에는 큐티책들이 놓여있어요

지금 용변 생각에서 벗어나 뭔가 (다른) 영적인 일을 하려는 데요..

 

But for the Hebrew, he praised God for his body.

And when you are old and incontinent, you wish

you praise God when your body is working

properly.

 

그러나 히브리인들은 용변 중에

자기 육체로 인해 하나님을 찬양합니다

여러분이 늙어서 용변이 부자연스러우면

그때는 당신의 육체가 잘 작동하게 하시는 하나님을 찬양할 것입니다

 

See that is Hebrew thinking

and you get the body in right understanding; the temple of the

Holy Spirit and the church is the body of Christ.

It is all body, body, body. Do you see?

 

보십시오 이것이 히브리적 사고입니다

여러분은 육체에 대한 올바른 이해를 가져야 합니다

육체는 하나님의 성전이며

교회는 그리스도의 육체(몸)입니다

보십시오 성경에 육체가 계속 나옵니다 바디, 바디, 바디

 

So actually what you do with your body, the length of

your hair is part of your spirituality; see it is not

something that is unconnected with your soul.

You're worshiping God with your body. And so all

the way through we find this Greek wrong

attitude to the body causing them problems.

문제들을 일으킴을 보는데요

 

And of course spiritual gifts because many evangelicals

are Greek in their thinking, they can’t cope with

spiritual gifts that affect the body.

 

물론 영적 은사들은 (몸에 나타나는 것들입니다)

왜냐하면 많은 복음주의자들도 헬라적 사고를 갖고 있어요

그들은 영적 은사들이 육체에 영향을 미친다고 보지 않습니다

 

And feel that

worship should be all inward and worshiping God

with your body. That is not on.

 

그들은 예배는 내면적인 것으로 여기며

몸으로 하나님을 예배하는 것은 가치를 두지 않습니다

 

Lifting up your hands? Weird, you should worship with

your soul. See how it comes?

 

예배 때 손을 올리는 것은 이상하게 여깁니다

그들은 예배를 영혼(마음)으로만 드리는 것입니다

어디서 온 것인지 아시겠죠?

 

Tongues is something that

happens to your body. It is something outward but

we’ve got so Greek that everything has to be inward

and spiritual. Do you know what I mean?

 

방언은 우리 몸에 나타나는 것입니다

외적인 현상입니다

그러나 우리는 너무 헬라적이 되어서

내면적이고 영적인 것만 치중합니다 (방언을 무시합니다)

이해하시죠?

Doing something with your body to worship is not spiritual.

Yes it is. It is for Hebrews.

The Hebrews lifted up their hands to God.

They dance before the Lord.

 

몸으로 움직여서 예배하는 일은 뭔가 영적이지 못한 것으로 여기는데

아닙니다 영적입니다 이게 히브리적 사고입니다

히브리인들은 하나님께 손을 들어 올렸습니다

그들은 주님 앞에서 춤을 춥니다

 

For them the body has to be offered to God but we prefer to stand.

The only part of the body we’re allowed to use is the

mouth. Isn’t that amazing?

 

그들에게 몸은 하나님께 드려져야 하는 것입니다

그러나 우리는 그저 (뻣뻣이) 서 있기를 좋아합니다

우리가 예배 때 사용하는 몸의 일부는 ‘입’뿐입니다 놀랍지 않습니까?

 

But see your body. Present your body as a living sacrifice. That is the whole emphasis in Corinthians.

 

그러나 여러분의 몸을 생각하십시오

‘여러분의 몸을 산 제사로 드리라’ 롬12:1

이것이 고린도서에 강조점입니다

 

Well spiritual gifts are bodily gifts, miracles, healings is a

bodily gift. ‘Oh it is not very spiritual is it?’ because He is

doing things to people’s bodies.’

 

성령의 은사들은 육체적으로 나타나는 은사들입니다

기적들 신유는 육체적 은사입니다

‘그건 영적이지 않죠, 그렇죠?

왜냐면 그는 사람들의 몸에 뭔가를 하니까요’

 

Tongues is something

happening to your body, it is outward.

 

방언은 여러분의 몸에 나타나는 것입니다

외적인 현상입니다 (몸을 무시하지 마십시오)

 

Well I just throw that in because you can see all the way

through that their basic problem was that they didn't

really know what to do with their bodies and they

were doing wrong things.

 

제가 이런 말씀을 드리는 이유는

여러분은 (고린도서에서) 내내 보셔야 합니다

그들은 근본적 문제들은, 그들은 자기들의 몸으로

뭘 해야 할지를 몰랐습니다

그리고 잘못된 일들을 행하고 있었습니다

 

So celibacy is considered a higher holiness than marriage.

And Saint Augustine I’m afraid really put the last nail in

that one.

 

그래서 주를 위한 독신을 결혼보다 더 거룩하게 여기는데요

성 어거스틴이 그걸 마지막으로 주장했죠

 

And ever since Augustine there has been the

hidden suspicion that somehow sex is not holy which is

totally un-Hebrew because every rabbi has to be married.

 

그래서 어거스틴 이후로

드러나지 않는 의구ㄹ심이 내려왔는데

성관계가 다소 거룩하지 않다는 것입니다

이건 전적으로 반히브리적 사고입니다

왜냐면 모든 랍비들은 반드시 결혼해야 했습니다

 

A celibate priesthood is an anathema in scripture. See

there is a calling of spiritual gift of celibacy but that is a

different thing.

 

독신 제사장제도는 성경에 나와있지 않습니다

성령의 은사로서 독신의 부르심이 있지요

그것은 차원이 다른 것이고요

 

It is not a higher holy away than the

physical act of love

 

독신성직은 육체적 사랑 (결혼 성직)보다

더 고상하거나 거룩하지 않습니다
